Badrinath Temple is located in Badrinath town of Chamoli district, where the gods still walk among the peaks. The temple, officially known as Badrinarayan Mandir, was rebuilt in the 8th century by Adi Shankaracharya, but the soul of this place feels eternal—etched into the rocks and flowing in the icy waters of the Alaknanda River.
Situated at an altitude of over 10,000 feet, the temple sits between the towering Himalayan peaks Nar and Narayan, the twin sages who, according to legend, still meditate nearby.
The idol of Lord Vishnu in a meditative pose carved in black stone is believed to be self-manifested and was discovered by Adi Shankaracharya in the river. Just outside, the bubbling Tapt Kund, a natural hot spring, welcomes devotees for a purifying dip like the Earth’s own offering to those seeking spiritual warmth in freezing temperatures.
